Once upon a time, there was a girl who was the victim of a brutal rape and became pregnant. Today, she is raising her child alone in her family’s home. Because of how people look at her and their prejudices, she’s marginalized: many think she’ll never be able to get married or have a normal life again. Her dignity has been shattered, but every morning, as she looks at her baby, she finds the strength to keep going. Her biggest dream? To have a job so she can provide for her child without depending on anyone and without enduring shame. Make no mistake—this is no fairy tale. Like Amina, there are nine young women in Maroua—survivors of violence or internally displaced persons who have fled insecurity—who bear the same wounds and share the same desire to pull themselves out of this situation. To break this cycle of suffering, the Association for Health and Aid to Disadvantaged Women and Children (ASAFED) and ORDID (Organizers of Resources for Development and Digital Inclusion) are launching an emergency project. We want to offer them accelerated, 100% hands-on training in sewing at the CMPJ in Maroua 3rd. In just a few weeks, Amina and her nine classmates will learn how to cut fabric, sew clothes, and maintain a sewing machine. To help them regain their strength, MINJEC will provide them with moral and entrepreneurial support. Finally, the Social Economy Delegation will assist them in organizing their work into a legal collective group (a GIC or a cooperative). Together, they will no longer be isolated victims, but self-reliant businesswomen working in solidarity. How will your donations make a difference?
